Hesed is a beautiful Hebrew word that describes God’s unrelenting love for us. It’s a love that runs so deep that nothing we can do, say, or think could extinguish it. This love is so pure and unadulterated that it’s always in service and pursuit of us. It’s a love that in the face of denial, attempts to woe us back. A love that’s so tender, it never forces itself upon us. A love that’s so selfless, it took on flesh; so longsuffering, it endured the cross; and so powerful, it triumphed over the grave. It’s a love that could never truly be duplicated or authentically reciprocated. It’s a love that while freely given, is inexplicably turned away.
It’s a love that we forsake, neglect, and take for granted. A love that we defer, as we chase the affections of this world and pursue graven images. We are Idolaters, wayward souls, prodigal children who’ve strayed from home. The good news is our Father always welcomes us home with open arms.
Lord, may we illuminate your love in our lives!
